The temperature here is somewhere between OMG and WTF!
I like hot weather. I think it might be a bit better if England was a bit hotter.
Freddie Highmore, (be careful what you wish for Freddie!!)
I’m back! Sorry about the hiatus, a wonderful holiday in Italy and then being very busy at work is to blame – well that’s my excuse anyway!
We Irish and the Brits do love to talk about the weather, normally we can wax lyrical about the rain, whether it be raining cats and dogs, tipping down, spitting or talking about the heavens opening – this weekend however, we’re talking about something very, very different. In my little neck of the woods the temperature will potentially hit 40C degrees that’s 104F! Those of you living in California or Southern Spain or any country close to the equator, you’re possibly thinking – big deal! So, let me try and put it in perspective.
In Cambridge in 2019, the temperature hit 38.7C, that’s 101.7F, that’s the hottest temperature ever recorded in the UK – it has NEVER reached the lofty heights of 40C, not ever! So, taking the flippancy out for a second, as a country, we’re just not geared up for temperatures like this and there’s somewhat a sense of panic as an example, I’ve been told that on Monday and Tuesday of next week we’re reinstating our Gold Command Protocol, that’s the protocol we had in place at the height of the recent pandemic! The Met-office has issued the first ever Red warning for exceptional heat.
But what does that mean and what’s the advice?
Government advice is that 999 services should be used in emergencies only; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice. When I read this, I had a wtf moment, 999, the 911 number in other countries IS for emergencies only but then I remembered, I’m living in the UK, the country where the 999 service gets calls at 4am asking, "Where is the best place to get a bacon sandwich right now?" and no, I’m not making it up!
The real advice is;
Look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated. Older people, those with underlying conditions and those who live alone are particularly at risk.
If you live alone, ask a relative or friend to phone to check that you are not having difficulties during periods of extreme heat.
Stay cool indoors: Close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors.
If going outdoors, use cool spaces considerately.
Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol. (never going to happen, landlords are already dancing in the street as they prepare for the on slaught!!)
Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals.
Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest.
Walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat, if you have to go out in the heat.
Avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day.
Make sure you take water with you, if you are travelling.
Check the latest weather forecast and temperature warnings – you can find these on TV, radio, mobile app or website.
During warm weather going for a swim can provide much welcomed relief. If you are going into open water to cool down, take care and follow local safety advice.
Ensure you have plenty of ice in the freezer and what a great excuse to stock up on Ice Cream, (great advice Liara!!).
All good advice however, if those of you in hot countries have any tips or tricks for keeping cool, please get in touch in the usual way and I’ll share with the rest of the gang!
