I couldn't have written things like 'Low' and 'Heroes,' those particular albums, if it hadn't have been for Berlin and the kind of atmosphere I felt there.

I've not done a travel post for a while so, I thought it was about time! Berlin has captivated my travel plans for ages with its rich history, vibrant culture, and amazing food scene. When the chance for a weekend getaway arose not long after Covid, I jumped at the opportunity, and it did not disappoint! In this guide, I’ll share my personal recommendations for places to stay, must-visit landmarks, and local cuisine that you must try, whether you're on a budget or ready to splurge a bit.
Accommodation Choices: Budget to Luxury
Finding the perfect place to stay is crucial for a great trip. Luckily, Berlin caters to all price ranges!
Affordable Stays
For budget travellers, Wombats City Hostel is a fantastic option. Located near Alexanderplatz, this lively hostel features a vibrant atmosphere, clean rooms, and a friendly community. It's perfect for making new friends while sharing travel stories over a beer in the common area.
Another excellent choice is The Circus Hostel in the Mitte district. With its prime location and cosy ambiance, this hostel offers both dormitory and private room options. The bar downstairs is a great spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Mid-Range Recommendations
If you want a comfortable stay without overspending, look no further than Hotel Otto. Nestled in Charlottenburg, this hotel offers complimentary breakfast and bike rentals, making exploring the city a breeze. The newly renovated rooms find a nice balance between comfort and affordability.
Another solid mid-range pick is NH Berlin Alexanderplatz. This hotel is situated in the city's heart and includes modern amenities paired with easy access to major attractions, enhancing your overall experience.
Upscale Options
For those ready to indulge, Hotel Adlon Kempinski is a must-visit. Positioned right next to Brandenburg Gate, this iconic hotel provides opulent rooms and outstanding service. You can enjoy a meal at one of their high-end restaurants or unwind at their luxurious spa.
Another impressive luxury option is SO/ Berlin Das Stue. With its stylish design, striking art installations, and stunning views of the Berlin Zoo, this hotel guarantees a memorable experience that you won’t forget.
Landmark Highlights You Can't Miss
Ensuring your trip is filled with cultural learning is essential. Berlin's historical landmarks are remarkable!
Iconic Brandenburg Gate
A trip to Berlin isn't complete without stopping by the Brandenburg Gate. This impressive 18th-century neoclassical monument symbolises not just the city's history but also the unity of East and West Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Berlin Wall Memorial
Visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial is vital for grasping the city’s complex past. This open-air exhibit preserves sections of the wall and narrates the impactful story of the divide that once disrupted lives. Watching the engaging videos here was a powerful experience that deepened my understanding of Germany's history.
Must-See Museum Island
Art enthusiasts shouldn't miss Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site that houses five renowned museums. I particularly enjoyed exploring the Pergamon Museum and the Neues Museum, which are both filled with breathtaking collections that captivated me for hours.
Vibrant East Side Gallery
Don’t forget to stroll along the East Side Gallery, the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall. This dynamic open-air gallery showcases stunning murals created by artists from around the globe, each expressing themes of freedom and hope. It's a perfect spot for taking eye-catching photos!
Savoring Local Flavors
Berlin's food scene is as diverse and rich as its history, so don't miss out on local specialties!
Street Food Essentials
You absolutely must try a Currywurst! I visited Curry 36, a local hotspot known for its deliciously spicy sausage. Pair it with crispy fries for the ultimate taste of Berlin street food. According to locals, this place serves over 1,500 sausages daily, emphasising its popularity.
The Döner Kebab is another street food staple. I chose Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap in Kreuzberg, famed for its delightful mixture of fresh vegetables and perfectly spiced meat. Many tourists and locals alike rave about this combination, and it’s easy to see why!
Traditional German Dining
For a unique sit-down experience, make sure to visit Zur letzten Instanz, the oldest restaurant in Berlin, established in 1621. Here, I enjoyed authentic Sauerbraten (pot roast) paired with flavorful red cabbage and fluffy dumplings. The restaurant’s history added a charming atmosphere to my meal.
Cosy Cafe Experience
If you're in need of a quiet spot to relax, head to Father Carpenter. This cafe is well-regarded for its quality coffee and delectable brunch offerings. I treated myself to their ricotta pancakes topped with fresh berries, a truly delightful start to my day!
Wrapping Up My Berlin Adventure
My weekend in Berlin turned out to be an unforgettable journey filled with amazing food, historical insights, and lively neighborhoods. Whether you're traveling on a budget or indulging in a luxury experience, this city has something to offer everyone.
When planning your trip to Berlin, make sure to enjoy the local cuisine, explore the landmarks that recount its rich history, and select accommodations that fit your travel style. I’m already looking forward to my next visit as I know there’s still so much more to discover!
Safe travels, and I invite you to share your own adventures in this incredible city!
