You could spend your time with your nose buried in a guidebook, but Amsterdam really is best explored on foot, so you can stumble upon the city’s hidden gems. The architecture and the beauty of some of the buildings is also wonderful.

The sun is finally stretching its limbs, the days are lengthening, and there’s a unmistakable whisper of spring in the air. It’s at this time each year that my thoughts inevitably turn to travel. So, as part of my series on weekend escapes, allow me to whisk you away to Amsterdam - one of my most cherished European cities.
Amsterdam is a city that offers a rich blend of history, art, and vibrant city culture. If you only have 48 hours to explore, you need a plan that captures the essence of this Dutch capital without feeling rushed. From world-class museums to charming canals, delicious food, and lively neighborhoods, this guide will help you make the most of your short stay.
Day 1 Morning: Dive into Art and History
Start your day at the Rijksmuseum, one of the most famous museums in the world. Arrive early to avoid crowds or book ahead on their website at busier periods! Spend a few hours admiring masterpieces by Dutch painters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. The museum’s collection spans centuries and offers a deep insight into the Netherlands’ artistic heritage.
Next, head to the nearby Van Gogh Museum. This museum holds the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings. It’s a must-see for art lovers who want to understand the life and work of this iconic artist. The museum’s layout guides you through Van Gogh’s evolving style and personal struggles.
Day 1 Afternoon: Explore the Canals and City Culture
After soaking in art, take a stroll along Amsterdam’s famous canals. These waterways are not only beautiful but also a key part of the city’s history and daily life. Walking or renting a bike to explore the canal belt gives you a unique perspective on Amsterdam’s architecture and urban design.
For lunch, try one of the best restaurants near the canals. Places like De Silveren Spiegel or Café de Jaren offer traditional Dutch dishes with a modern twist. Don’t miss tasting local specialties such as stroopwafels or herring if you’re feeling adventurous.
Spend your afternoon wandering through neighbourhoods like Jordaan, known for its narrow streets, independent shops, and cozy cafés. This area reflects the authentic city culture of Amsterdam, away from the tourist crowds.
Day 1 Evening: Relax and Enjoy the Nightlife
Choose one of the best hotels in the city centre to rest after your busy day. Hotels like The Hoxton or Pulitzer Amsterdam combine comfort with a historic atmosphere.
For dinner, explore the vibrant food scene in De Pijp or Leidseplein. These neighborhoods offer a variety of international cuisines and lively bars. Try Indonesian rijsttafel, a Dutch colonial legacy, or enjoy fresh seafood at a canal-side restaurant.
Day 2 Morning: Markets and Museums
Begin your second day at the Albert Cuyp Market, the largest street market in Amsterdam. Here you can sample local snacks, buy souvenirs, and experience everyday life in the city.
After the market, visit the Stedelijk Museum for modern and contemporary art. This museum complements your earlier visits by showcasing works from the 20th and 21st centuries, including pieces by Dutch and international artists.
Day 2 Afternoon: More Canals and Hidden Gems
Take a canal cruise to see Amsterdam from the water. This relaxing trip offers a different view of the city’s bridges, houseboats, and historic buildings. Many cruises include audio guides that explain the history and significance of what you see.
After the cruise, explore the less touristy areas like the Eastern Docklands or the Plantage district. These neighbourhoods offer green spaces, quirky shops, and quiet canals. Visit the Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, to enjoy a peaceful break.
Day 2 Evening: Final Taste of Amsterdam
For your last dinner, pick a restaurant that highlights Dutch ingredients and innovative cooking. Places like Restaurant Breda or Daalder are known for their creative menus and excellent service.
End your night with a walk along the canals, enjoying the illuminated bridges and reflections on the water. This peaceful moment captures the charm and city culture that make Amsterdam unforgettable.
Now go home and have a rest!!
