I Am In Need Of Music!

I am in need of music that would flow

Over my fretful, feeling fingertips,

Over my bitter-tainted, trembling lips,

With melody, deep, clear, and liquid-slow.

Oh, for the healing swaying, old and low,

Of some song sung to rest the tired dead,

A song to fall like water on my head,

And over quivering limbs, dream flushed to glow!

There is a magic made by melody:

A spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool

Heart, that sinks through fading colours deep

To the subaqueous stillness of the sea,

And floats forever in a moon-green pool,

Held in the arms of rhythm and of sleep.

Elizabeth Bishop

Elizabeth Bishop is a versatile, eclectic poet who writes on various topics. Many of her poems relate to woman, they reveal some true facts about womanhood, facts that are well worth cogitating over.

“I Am In Need of Music” is one amongst them. Many commentators have suggested this is a simple tribute to music I however, think like many others there is a deeper meaning. For me it’s a story about how she has faced challenges in life and how she has used music to overcome them. She speaks of how music should be, how life should be.

She tells us music should be free from the words, music should flow straight from the heart with no obstacles. We should find space for music in our lives, it should start in the morning and flow and move with us all day, it should move beyond boundaries and break rules, it should live in us and strengthen those around us.

In parallel, she explains how a woman’s life should be, her life should be free and unburdened, she should challenge conformity and make her mark on the world, she should flow freely through life and how that life should influence and inspire others.

I personally think it’s beautifully written and is indeed one of my favourite poems of all time, it a poem that inspires me, that makes me stop and think and read between the lines, I love it.

It may however just be a simple tribute to music 😊
