Three days in beautiful Seville

The air soft as that of Seville in April, and so fragrant that it was delicious to breathe it.
Christopher Columbus

Seville, a little like Florence, is one of those cities I could simply go back to over and over again, there’s so much to do, so much to see and most importantly, so much to eat and drink! If you’re thinking of nipping there for a long weekend, here’s my suggestions for the whistle stop tour of this gem of a city!

Firstly, where to stay, well, Seville is full of reasonably priced, boutique hotels, expensive five star hotels or, AirBnB’s, you really are spoiled for choice however, if I’m planning any kind of a break, I find the Telegraph a great place to start!The link to the Telegraph’s Seville suggestions is here.

Seville is cram packed with historical gems that have been preserved for us tourists. On your first visit, (and I say first because, once you’ve been, you’ll keep going back!), these are my suggestions;

Seville Cathedral

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, usually just called Seville Cathedral, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s one of the most famous landmarks in Spain and it’s also the largest Gothic cathedral in the world!

Audio-guide tours of the cathedral cost 9 EUR for adults or 4 EUR for children. However, for 16 EUR you can do a tour with an in-person guide and they will take you to see also the roof of the cathedral, not for the faint hearted, I don’t normally suffer from vertigo however, on the occasion I did go up there, I couldn’t wait to get back down! However, that said, if you don’t have a fear of heights, the views over Seville from the roof of the cathedral are simply stunning!

What can I say, it’s bloody busy so, if you can afford it, I’d recommend you book a skip-the-line guided tour online.

Real Alcázar

The Real Alcázar of Seville is the largest royal palace still in use and is also protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The architecture was heavily influenced by the Arabic, or Moorish presence in Spain at the time it was built, honestly, it’s stunningly beautiful and it creates a vibrant atmosphere steeped in history, I love it!

The Real Alcázar also has a huge garden that you can visit, even with a small maze inside it (yes I’ll admit, yours truly has found myself lost in it twice!) Like the Cathedral, it’s very, very popular, I recommend you buy a ticket online beforehand, preferably another jump the queue ticket, as it will literally save you some serious queuing on the day!

No Spain bucket list would be complete without a visit to the Real Alcazar of Seville – go see it!

Plaza de España

You may recognize this beautiful Spanish square as it has featured in loads of films over the years it even appeared briefly (all of 48 seconds!) in one of the Star Wars films!

Plaza de España is also one of the most famous tourist attractions in Seville for its beautiful architecture and atmosphere. If you’re visiting on a sunny day, you can also go on a little boat tour in the canal around the plaza.

You know when you look at something and you think, that looks easy, I could do that no problem! Some friends and I rented a boat for an hour and thought it would be enough to go all the way round and back, but we were surprised to find how hard rowing boats are to manoeuvre so, only ended up getting half way and having to go back – turns out I’m not Helen Glover MBE after all!

Metropol Parasol

The Metropol Parasol is a wooden structure in the shape of giant mushrooms built over a Roman Antiquarium, where historical remains are displayed in a museum.

It’s a recent addition to Seville, having opened only in 2011, but one that has become quickly popular for its beautiful views over the city, similar to the views from the roof of the cathedral but not quite as scary!

Access to the viewing platform is free although it is a little confusing to find your way to the elevator, yes, I got lost again!

These four sites are huge and will take time to explore so, for your first visit, lets leave it there!

Where to eat in Seville

Seville is home to around 3,000 tapas bars, some of which have been up and running for hundreds of years, serving the kinds of local specialities that have been fuelling locals for just as long: bull’s tail slow-cooked in red wine, small bowls of cumin-laced chickpeas, a simple platter of jamon, the list is long and delicious, a few of my favs would be;

Well, you know I’m no closet foody! One other tip I would give you is, try a walking food tour, there’s loads to choose from, have a look on line! Lastly, Orange Wine is a thing, if you can find it, give it a go, I was surprised just how much I loved it!!
