Easter brings joy and celebration to communities worldwide, uniting families and friends through heartfelt traditions. While its roots are in Christianity, Easter embraces a rich tapestry of cultural customs. From vibrant egg hunts to festive parades, each country has its unique way of celebrating. Let's embark on an exciting journey to explore the most colourful Easter traditions from across the globe!

United States

In the United States, one of the most beloved Easter traditions is the Easter egg hunt. Nearly 90% of U.S. families participate in this fun activity, where children eagerly search for hidden coloured eggs filled with candies or small toys. Communities often organize large hunts in parks, while the White House hosts a famous Easter Egg Roll on its lawn, drawing thousands of parents and children.

Churches nationwide hold sunrise services, marking the occasion with inspirational hymns and communal prayers to evoke the joy of Easter morning.

Germany

Easter traditions in Germany celebrate the arrival of spring with vibrant decorations. The Easter Bunny, known as "Osterhase," visits children and brings chocolate eggs, creating a festive atmosphere. In fact, 68% of German children look forward to this exciting visit each year.

A beautiful custom is the "Ostereierbaum," where trees and branches are decorated with colorful eggs. This tradition not only brightens neighbourhoods but also inspires creativity and community spirit.

Italy

Italy's Easter, known as "Pasqua," is marked by deep religious significance and festive gatherings. Families come together to enjoy a traditional meal, often featuring lamb, which symbolizes purity and sacrifice.

In Florence, the "Scoppio del Carro" on Easter Sunday is a striking event where a cart loaded with fireworks is set ablaze. Crowds gather to witness this spectacular display, which symbolizes hope for a fruitful harvest, blending history and celebration in a vibrant spectacle.

Australia

Australia celebrates Easter with a unique twist by featuring the Easter Bilby instead of the traditional bunny. This charming creature is a symbol of wildlife conservation; many Australians buy chocolate bilbies, with purchases supporting efforts to protect endangered species.

Various towns across Australia host lively Easter festivals that include parades, egg hunts, and community activities. These festivities foster a sense of unity, as families and friends come together to celebrate.

Greece

In Greece, Easter, or "Pascha," holds profound cultural importance. Celebrations kick off on Holy Week, culminating in a midnight church service on Easter Saturday, where the ringing of bells announces the resurrection of Christ.

One unique tradition involves dyeing eggs a deep red to symbolize Christ's blood. Families engage in a fun game where they crack eggs against each other, believing that the one with the intact egg will have good fortune for the year.

Sweden

Swedish Easter traditions blend folklore with Christian observance. Children dress up as "Easter witches," wearing colourful attire and headscarves, and go door-to-door collecting candy.

Swedes also share festive meals that often feature lamb and various traditional dishes. This joyful time marks the arrival of spring and strengthens family bonds through communal gatherings.

Mexico

Mexico's Easter celebration, known as "Semana Santa," or Holy Week, is rich in rituals and traditions. The week is filled with reenactments of biblical scenes and lively parades that highlight the passion of Christ.

One stunning tradition is the creation of intricate sawdust carpets in the streets. These colourful displays showcase artistry and devotion, as families gather to share traditional foods, continuing their celebrations well into the night.

United Kingdom

In the UK, Easter is celebrated with charming customs like egg rolling. Families and friends gather to roll hard-boiled eggs down grassy hills, competing to see whose egg can roll the farthest without breaking.

On Good Friday, the consumption of "hot cross buns" is a cherished tradition. These sweet buns, marked with a cross, symbolize the crucifixion and are often enjoyed with tea or coffee during the Easter season.

Finland

In Finland, Easter is a festive occasion that combines a blend of cultural practices. Children dress as witches, going door-to-door to collect treats in exchange for handmade drawings.

Easter in Finland also signifies the arrival of spring, prompting families to enjoy nature and outdoor activities. Campfires are often lit, symbolizing the end of winter and the warmth of the season ahead.
