Welcome back Coldplay!
But high up above or down below
When you are too in love to let it show
Oh but if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
Fix You – Coldplay
If like me you’re a big fan of Coldplay, and let’s face it, as they’re the biggest selling band in the world, chances are you are too, the last few weeks will be quite exciting. The rumour machine that something was happening started when a poster appeared in Paulista metro station in São Paulo. The poster, a black and white vintage-inspired shot, which sees the band sat with German philosopher, poet, and composer Friedrich Nietzsche, displays the date November 22, 1919, was spotted by a couple of fans before it was taken down shortly after. At first it was said to be a mistake or a hoax before several other identical posters were spotted in n Berlin, Hong Kong, Madrid, Munich and Sydney.
And so, the excitement began.
On Monday this week Lena Tayara, a Coldplay super fan posted the picture of a card she’d received in the post on Twitter, the post read; “Fake alert! Got this in the post this morning with autographs in gold in the corners. Can’t see why anybody would send it. Anybody got anything similar?”
The card read; “Dear Friends, My typing isn’t very good, I’m sorry. I and we hope wherever you are, you’re OK. For the last 100 years or thereabouts we have been working on a thing called ‘Everyday Life', In the classifieds, you might write ‘double album for sale, one very careful owner’. One half is called ‘Sunrise’, the other ‘Sunset’. It comes out 22 Nov. It is sort of how we feel about things. We send much love to you from hibernation”.
What Lena didn’t realise was the card was actually genuine – wow, now there’s something to frame and put on the wall for ever! After hundreds of fans convinced her they thought it was actually genuine and seemed to tally with the global appearance of the posters she tweeted; "If I'd known that card was genuine, I would have put on a nicer tablecloth before I took the pics.
"But thanks for the card - I'm AMAZED and very touched." Clearly Lena is the master of understatement! Several other fans have now reported receiving the same card.
The excitement began to grow.
On Wednesday a strange advert appeared in a small, provincial Welsh newspaper;
Again, there was lots of scratching of heads, people wondering if this really could be true. The same advert then appeared in another provincial newspaper in Devon suggesting the advert could actually be true.
In the North Wales Daily Post, the advertisement sits alongside ads for bales of hay and a fridge-freezer. In the Express and Echo, the Devon newspaper, it appears above an ad for a car boot sale and next to an advertisement for someone seeking a tenant in their apartment. Coldplay has strong links to both Devon and North Wales, with Chris Martin coming from Exeter in Devon, and Jonny Buckland growing up in north Wales
Jonny confirmed the legitimacy of the ad by tweeting; “I once had a holiday job at the Daily Post, placing photos of houses for sale. I wasn't very good at it. JB”.
Finally, on Thursday Chris Martin broke the silence and confirmed he would be exclusively interviewed by Annie Mac on Radio one’s Future Sounds. Not only were we treated to a beautiful interview, we got to hear premiers of two of the tracks, “Orphans” and “Arabesque”. As a huge fan I think both tracks are brilliant, Orphans quintessentially Coldplay, Arabesque a complete departure from the norm. This shouldn’t be a surprise though as Chris talked about the album as an opportunity to show off their experimental side.
During the interview Chris revealed how their “Head Full of Dreams” tour was a real turning point: "There was something about our last tour that just made me at peace with speaking openly and not minding if people disagree."
"This has been the first time where we have felt like 'oh we’ve got to this place as a band, there is really nothing to think about career wise as it were' so you can just speak completely freely and let all the colours of your own life come through."
"Some of it's very personal about real things in my life," he says. "Some of it's about things that we see. Some of it’s about trying to empathise with what other people are going through, because it seems to me one of things that might help people have a better time is to put themselves in other people’s shoes rather than judging from afar."
Welcome back Coldplay, I can’t wait until the 22nd of November!
