Friends for Life!

When I hit thirty ten and, as you do, reflected back on my life to date, one of the things that took me a little by surprised was, I seem to have fewer friends than I had when I was in my twenties! I thought at first this was strange…. was it me, was I turning into a social pariah! Having done some research with my bessies in the local, turns out, the older we get the fewer friends we have, there seems to be some equation that says; > years = < friends. Who knew!

But here’s the thing, I don’t feel lonely, I don’t feel I have a lack of friends, in fact, I’m very happy with the group of friends I have now. There’s something quite reassuring in the fact I have a close bunch of friends I know I can rely on.

What I find interesting is that many of my friends are polar opposites, it’s almost like, you need different personalities in different doses in different situations. I have the friends I know will call me back when I send them a text along the lines of… “OMG I’M SITTING ON THE SOFA CRYING MY EYES OUT BUT NOTHING IS WRONG – WTF IS WRONG WITH ME????” or the friend that responds to… “You will NEVER guess who I saw in Waitrose looking all lovey dovey together!!!”

I pretty damned please with the collection of friends I’ve made, I have the friends in my life I need, the friends I need that pick me up when I’m down, the ones that will laugh at my silly jokes, the ones that will help me when I’m in financial meltdown and the friends that will happily tag along on what constitutes my version of holiday! I think with hind sight you need specific friends in your life;

The “feck it, I know it’s not pay day until next week but let’s go out and get pissed” friend

You’ve had an argument with your mum/dad/partner or… that guy you like just got a girlfriend out of NOWHERE (like, he was probably texting you both at the same time and then chose her – so fecking not cool, areshole) or… you were at the traffic lights in Chelsea minding your own business and some fecker runs into the back of you because their Chihuahua just escaped from their Gucci handbag! What you NEED right now is to simply go out and kill the rage you need remember that you’re still a really hot functioning member of society!

This friend is ON IT! You probably didn’t even suggest going out, she suggested it and she’s arrived at your house clad with a bottle of fizz and a couple of possible dress options for you to borrow just in case.

Even though she doesn’t have two beans, she will have stopped at the cash machine ang got an extra thirty quid just in case your totally strapped!

She’s got your back, she’ll move worlds just to make sure you can get as hammered as your heart desires and she is zero effort – there’s no questions about plans, no convincing or begging, she’s there and already ordering a round of tequila! LOVE her!

The “I know the word sucks right now but talk to me about it” friend

This is an essential friend – The one who, even when you’re kicking up a huge dramatic fuss about pretty much feck all, will text you back within seconds and say exactly what you need to hear. Everyone needs a friend that’ll make you feel less alone in that moment of need and happily bang out all of the following lines without even stopping to think about it: ‘she’s just a fucking bitch’, ‘why are people such fucktards, ‘you deserve so much better’, ‘he’s not worth it’ …You know the score!

You need a friend that’ll let you get all the built-up emotions and issues out of your system so that you can move on and be all sassy and happy again, even if it’s just at the end of a chain of texts rather than in real-life.

If you are this friend you are secretly one of the most needed yet underappreciated friends in the entire friendship universe, just letting you know, right.

The “OMG STOP…. You’re making me actually cry now!!” friend

We all know one of these, we may not see them as much as some of our other friends but when you do… the world just becomes a brighter, simpler, light hearted place, the ones that make your soul sing!

They bring food, they tell the best stories, they have the best ideas, they play the best games and they have the best gossip. Someone that when you’re with them literally makes your tummy do shrieks of pain from all the laughter, someone who fixes your mood instantly and lifts you up.

The “grab your coat, we’re off down the Fulham road for some retail therapy!” friend

When I was younger used to pop into town every Saturday loaded with twenty quid for a KFC and whatever I could find rooting through the endless racks at Primark or TK Maxx, I always had favourite shopping friends. It’s imperative you find your shopaholic soul mate!

I’m a “quick romp in the sale section, maybe quickly try something on before succumbing to the new season racks”, I like my retail therapy friend to be of the same ilk! I have some friends, friends that can spend HOURS in a single shop, I love them very much however, I don’t do shopping with them!

I had two of these but one recently moved to Canada with her hubby, (selfish Bish!), so anyone wishing to apply for the vacant position, ping me an email and we can chat.

The “but look at where you are right now, look at what you’ve achieved!” friend

You know when you’re sitting on the sofa sulking, sulking about the fact you feel like a failure because, OMG! Have you seen how successful everyone is on Pinterest, have you seen how many hits they’re getting over my pathetic effort? That’s when you need the friend that’s known you all your life, your oldest friend, the one that is going to basically kick you into reality.

Sure, she’s great for nostalgic lolz about how drunk you got at 15, but she’ll also remind you of your darker times and how much you’ve grown as a person and HELLO, YOU ARE AN ADULT. YOU, SILLY LITTLE YOU, MADE IT TO ADULTHOOD and that’s AMAZING!!

She’ll give you strength when sometimes life feels too overwhelming to be strong. Otherwise known as the Rock friend, I’m told by a few of my Bessies, I’m this one for them…… Love that!

I’m delighted to say that I have at least one of each of these friends. So whilst I may have fewer “friends” than I did in my twenties, these are my friends for life and I love each and every one of them!
