I have to wear two sports bras when I do my cardio. It takes a lot to hold these puppies up!
Fergie
Let’s be honest, finding half decent sports bras for your workout is at best a bit of a gamble and at worst £50 down the toilet! It's partly because a one-sports-bra-fits-every-workout philosophy doesn't work. Different types of training require different support, plus you move differently in spin than you do in yoga, and your undies should reflect this.
Confused? You're not alone. Studies show that 94% of UK women struggle to find the best sports bra for them and more than a third of women feel like this affects their workout.
Last week whilst sitting on the tube I found a fab article about this very subject with some fabulous ideas and suggestions. The article rounded up the best sports bras for low and high impact workouts depending on your size. They highlight styles for yoga, high intensity, best sports bra for running and everything in between. And, guess what? None of them look like you’ve tried to straightjacket your bewbs to your chest – result!
The article started with a quick guide to finding the right bra;
- Make sure you test them, not just try them on.Smash out some star jumps in the fitting room. If the bra doesn’t ride up, chances are it’s a keeper!
- Test the size with your fingers, if you can fit more than two fingers between your chest and the material, it’s too loose and will cause uncomfortable chafing.
- The underband should sit level all the way around. If it rises up at the back, you might need a smaller size.
- Adjust your straps before every workout. You shouldn’t be able to stretch the straps more than two inches from your shoulder
- Hand wash bras if you have time. Otherwise, stick them in a mesh bag, opt for a cool cycle and avoid the drier – heat can affect their elasticity.
Great – now I know all that, what’s the recommendations;
If you’re into low impact sports and you have small boobs, say A-C cup, you’re more likely to get away with bralet styles, and stretchy fabrics than your more endowed friends – but that doesn’t mean zero support. Your puppies are delicate, so still treat them to adequate support.
Their recommendations are;
- Varley Martel Sports Bra
- Wolford 3W Skin Bra
- Lorna Jane Hurricane Sports Bra
- USA Pro Long Length Training Crop Top
For ladies with smaller boobs participation in higher impact sports the recommendations are;
- Asics Cooling Bra
- Shock Absorber Active Shaped Support Bra
- Victoria’s Secret Angel Max Sport Bra
- Sweaty Betty Victory Padded Run Bra
For those of us that are a little more endowed, support is imperitive and for low impact sports the recommendations for low impact are;
- Berlei Ultimate Performance Crop Top
- M&S Post-Surgery Extra High Impact Bra
- Triumph Triaction Magic Motion Sports Bra
For high impact sports;
- Lululemon Enlite Bra – this is the one I use at the Gym, a bit expensive but honestly, well worth the additional expense!
- Panache Sports Wired Bra
- Freya Epic Atomic Moulded Crop Top Sports Bra
So the next time you’re boobs feel like they’re on fire after a workshop, have another read of this and don’t say I didn’t give you some good advice!
