Happy Chocolate Egg Day!!

Once we hit forty, women only have about four taste buds left: one for vodka, one for wine, one for cheese, and one for chocolate.

Gina Barreca

Like many of you I’m hoping the Easter Bunny will come knocking tomorrow and leave a small, (not too small!!), pile of chocolate yumminess in the shape of eggs, (and with any luck they’ll be in boxes with lots of extra little chocolate gems!).

Chocolate is a really weird, or maybe I should say unique, food that is sweet and bitter, crumbly and smooth. It is enjoyed by everyone in so many different ways. Although it seems that many of my girlfriends, especially the two I share my house with, tend to crave chocolate more than simply eating it as a tasty snack.

I’m not talking about the “I’m really, really hungry, I’m going to supplement healthy quinoa salad with a couple or three chocolate and peanut butter brownies”. No, I’m talking about demented females gnawing at the walls because they crave chocolate, lots and lots of chocolate!

I have yet to meet a guy who can’t concentrate because his mind is occupied with the fact that he wants some chocolate. So, what is the cause of this gender-orientated obsession?

It could be advertisers to blame as most chocolate adverts seem to be aimed at women. For example, they show half-naked men lying in front of an open fire talking about how wonderful chocolate tastes, or there are a group of women enjoying chocolate as a cheeky little snack in front of a dark skyline. It seems a little biased but conversely it could be because advertisers know women crave chocolate more than men and so have tailored their adverts to them.

There was also one well known chocolate bar maker that attempted to tap into the male market by branding their chocolate “not for girls!” Though I’m not too sure about exactly how successful that campaign was. This brings me to think there is a more obvious reason as to why women crave chocolate - a scientific one.

I’m sure I’m not alone in craving the luscious brown stuff when I have PMS and so there may be a more logical answer involved. In times of low mood, mineral deficiencies and low energy levels there are ingredients in chocolate that our bodies tell us we need. For example, magnesium is found in chocolate which could help with mineral deficiencies.

When women are feeling tired, low in mood the sugar and fat can raise blood sugar levels and even dopamine levels in the brain increasing energy, mood and improving sense of wellbeing. However, (common sense bit for the lawyers!), chocolate in large quantities is not healthy and can contribute to people being overweight. It creates a bit of a vicious cycle as it is also thought to be highly addictive with claims that it targets the same part of our brains as illicit drugs. There are many factors that seem to contribute to why women tend to crave chocolate more than men. Whether it’s stereotypical, PMS-related or just plain addiction, I think the real reason women crave chocolate is simply because it tastes good!

So next time you feel the need to nip out to the newsagents for an extra-large bar of your favourite chocolate, don’t feel guilty, think of it as a kind of medicinal pick me up!!
