Walking Billboards

"Your clothes are your billboard and they give you the ability to tell people who you are and what you’re about without opening your mouth."

Henry Holland

Despite all the recent tragedy in London I still feel very fortunate to call it home. There’s a moment when you realise a city has gotten under your skin, the moment when you realise it heavily influences your fashion style. London is a real melting pot of cultural diversity producing a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns, which is the draw for some of the world’s best fashion designers, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Lulu Guinness…… The list goes on.

Whilst we mere mortals can only aspire to the latest Stella McCartney creation, we can at least be comfortable in our own style, happy in the knowledge that it’s influenced by such fashion gods and goddesses! I commute into town almost every day and like most other Londoners we crowd onto the DLR or the Tube. Anyone that has travelled by these means of transport will tell you there is a real art in avoiding all unnecessary eye contact however, next time you’re on the tube take a few moments to look around.

You won’t see many Lulu Guinness creations but what you will see at this time of year is a fashion that is almost unique to any other corner of the globe, a style inspired by cultural fabrics, vibrant reds, oranges and blues from Sudan, delicate embroidered laces from the Italian Islands, fabrics such as gentle, shimmering silks from India and Hijabs made of Georgette fabrics, beautifully embellished. Look further down and you’ll see delicate sandals in hushed browns through to eclectic heals which are true works of art with their sculptural detailing and pop art floral uppers and bows, (if you’ve never been to Irregular Choice – treat yourself, http://www.irregularchoice.com/).

Whether you’ve shopped at Liberties or Primark or Karen Millen or All Saints or, you’ve wandered up to Camden on a Sunday and picked up a few bits and pieces, London is the place you can be you and show the world around you who you are.

No two outfits are the same and I love it! So, the question is, is this the true London style or are we just plagiarising ideas from around the globe? I say, who cares, I feel good in my skin and I look around at the other billboards who look great in their heterogenous style. It’s not so much a style, more an outward expression of who we are and right now, we are free, we are one, we are London!

And so, we draw parallels with Second Life. One of the things I love about SL is the fact I can be as outrageous or as conservative as I want to be, from skirts and tops that would have steam coming from my dad’s ears to elegant ball gowns in flowing taffeta that would make my mum cry tears of joy, what I wear in SL is what helps define me so what you see is what you get, take it or leave it 😊
