Fashion Anniversary Fever! (Sorry about the Rant at the end 😊)

Lots of “Monthly” events and shops are celebrating their anniversaries at the moment, from Truth hairs 10th anniversary, the first real hair stylist that managed to evolve and survive in the mesh era, to the fifth anniversary of The Men’s Department, the first male monthly that allowed guys to stop grimacing about having to go shopping around the grid, everything new and cool was all now in one spot – I can still hear the collective sigh of relief!

But I want to give special mention to FaMESHed who are five years old this month.

I remember a friend telling me about this monthly event where some of the really good designers were showcasing their funky new mesh stuff. It arrived long before mesh bodies, this was all about standard sized cloths, landscaping and furniture. It came at a time when there was lots of grumbling’s around; “I love my shape, why should I change it just to suit some conformist dictatorship!!”

Well, for me it was about embracing the future, a future where “stuck on” clothes would become antiquated, a thing of the past. Where people with much larger brains than mine could make 3D models on their computers, texturize them into something resembling a dress or a pair of jeans and then upload them in all their fashionable glory!

Of course, at first, they were way from perfect but looking at the possibilities it was clearly something to embrace. So, there was lots of little designers all over the grid producing this mesh stuff, so for those of us that really wanted this new technology to provide us with a new and colourful future, it meant schlepping around the grid hunting this stuff out.

Then came FaMESHed, I seem to remember it was linked to a store called Cracked Mirror or something, I could be wrong but five years is a long time ago in Second Life, (remember, the old rule-of-thumb that one Second Life year equals seven years in the non-virtual, muggle world!!). Anyway, it arrived with lots of fanfares and streamers and we were in awe! Lots of designers all showcasing their new, sexy, cool mesh things. I can’t remember how many “stalls” there were but it wasn’t that many, however I do remember the tent it was in and I do remember buying a sofa, a sofa I still use from time to time.

So, as well as congratulating FaMESHed I salute them as pioneers of not only the genre that has spawned things like Uber and C88, but having the foresight to see mesh as a thing that could potentially transform Second Life and for providing a platform for the early designers to express their creative talent. I hope the next five years are equally as successful!

Postscriptum!

As you can probably tell, I love the monthly events, in fact I look forward to the dates coming up in my virtual diary but I do have a beef with them, actually, not so much with them but the people that visit.

Why do people insist in taking demos and then trying them on in an over lagged sim – are they really that stupid, do they not realise that it’s much quicker to collect all the demos and take them home to try on, do they not wonder why it takes forever for their newly acquired demos to rez? God forbid there’s a HUD, you could be there all day! Well, wondering over, listen up boys and girls – the reason your stuff rezzes so slowly is because THERE’S SO MUCH LAG IN THE SIM BECAUSE YOU AND YOUR STUPID FRIENDS ARE TRYING ON CLOTHES WITH LOTS OF SCRIPTS WHICH SLOWS DOWN THE SIM TO A SANILS PACE – STOP IT!! GET YOUR DEMOS AND FECK OFF BACK HOME!! This will allow you to try things on much faster but also allow the rest of us to get in and look at what’s on offer!
