The Lion Roars – but it could have been louder!
I'm not a huge fan of the Oscars, don't get me wrong, I love to see people at the top of their profession given the opportunity to bask in the lime light of their success, success based on their ability to be very good at what they do. I suppose my gripe is around the post award delivery speeches which I find on the whole a little shallow, more than a little predictable and given in such a way that the recipient assumes everyone outside Hollywood actually gives a shite, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this Angelina Jolie et al, but most of us don't!
Apparently, more people tune into the Oscars than any other non-sporting event on tv which is I suppose thanks to society's obsession with celebrity. I'm thrilled some of these “role models” took the opportunity to have a dig at Donald “Cheeto-faced, ferret wearing shitgibbon” Trump and rather than laugh at the best movie debacle I was quite moved by the good grace of the La La Land’s cast and crew as they handed over the Oscar to the Moonlight cast and crew.
The one good thing the Oscars does though is, it reminds me of the films I meant to go and see. I'd seen Moonlight and whilst it's a personal view, I didn’t think it was that good and whilst it may sound controversial, I wonder if the subject matter contributed to a politically correct decision making process. I'd not seen La La Land or Lion so decided to rectify that by pootling off to my local cinema to see what was on, subsequently, having read the book by Saroo Brierley I sat through two hours of rapture.
I don’t want to give the whole thing away but what a great film! I’ve love Dev Patel since slum dog so was looking forward to his performance but omg, what a brilliant performance by the young Sunny Pawar and Nicole Kidman! What an utterly captivating, beautiful, emotional performance by Sunny Pawa, who’s own story is now worthy of a Hollywood script, the boy from the back streets of Mumbai who captured the hearts of Joe Public and the red-carpet glitterati alike, he is truly an inspiration to all aspiring actors whatever their background!
For me though, the outstanding performance was delivered by Nicole Kidman. Again, not wanting to give too much away, Nicole Kidman play the Tasmanian foster mother who takes Sarroo into her home and her heart. I could describe the performance but the Telegraph does it much better;
“While Rooney Mara has a fairly limited function as Saroo’s girlfriend, Kidman enriches the film enormously. It’s a sterling, supportive performance. The script never lunges for cheap drama by forcing Saroo into a binary choice between mothers, and the most complex beats are about tip-toeing around, often counter-productively, to avoid hurt or betrayal.”
“Kidman’s Sue has her own story to tell, and holds onto it forcefully in the domestic scenes: she can embarrass her son with pride and love, but she’s also a fascinatingly strained figure, often barely keeping her grip. Right now, the Best Supporting Actress Oscar must be hers to lose.”
Which brings me back to the Oscars. Fences is another film I really enjoyed and I thought Viola Davis was very good but honestly, in this far from expert’s opinion I thought Nicole Kidman’s performance in Lion was FAR superior!
