My Meaning of Christmas..... I think.....
So what does Christmas mean to me……… Well, I’d love to say, “it’s the time of year we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus and we give thanks for the joy and happiness he brought to the world!” Truth is, I don’t believe that, despite spending my formative years in an Irish All Girls Catholic School, Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem, Creatorem caeli et terrae, et in Iesum Christum, Filium Eius unicum, Dominum nostrum, qui conceptus est de Spiritu Sancto, natus ex Maria Virgine, blah, blah blah……… I’ve become a bit of an atheist. The Catholic doctrine tells us that God likes to test out faith but the thing is I have a job where I see pain and suffering everyday, I see lives torn apart, I see grieving husbands, wives, mothers, fathers and children so I feel well and truly tested to the point I think I may well have well and truly failed!
There’s bits of the Catholic Christmas I like, I love singing carols, I even enjoy going to midnight mass but it’s the experience rather than any belief mechanism. So for me, Christmas is about having the people I love around me, my friends and family, it’s about being together, sharing memories, sharing food, sharing laughter, watching old films, watching new films, falling asleep after dinner, the strictly Christmas special, James bond, pressies under the tree, the sound of wrapping paper being torn, the smell of a Christmas tree, the taste of fresh, roast turkey, the squiffy feeling after a little too much wine, hugs and kisses, sparkling lights, Father Christmas and his reindeer, the Pogues and Kirsty MColl, smiling children, the Christmas number one, the queens speech, shiny babbles, the excitement of waking up in a warm bed on Christmas morning…….
But I come back to my first point, having the people I love around me, it’s about love.
Wait a minute…… didn’t someone once say God is Love?? One of those apostle blokes?? Or do they call them evangelists, yes, that was it, that John bloke;
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 1 John 4:16.
So the fact that God is love and I feel full of love at Christmas, does that make me a believer after all? Now I’m confused!!
