Is it time yet??

It seems to have been Christmas in the shops since October but don’t worry, I’m not about to launch into a tirade of righteous indignation about commercialisation and the true meaning of Christmas dissolving into a septic pond of failing moral standards. To be honest I quite like seeing the Christmas lights going up, tree’s being erected and the ubiquitous Christmas Markets springing up around a city centre near you – I confess to a guilty little smile when I see the first twinkling lights and the cardboard cut outs of Saint Nick in shop doorways, essentially I’m a bit of a Christmas nut, I love it and the older I get the more I love it so by the time I’m in my seventies I hope I’m still fit enough to swing from the Christmas tree fairly lights!

As you may know if you’ve been following my blog I’m also a music nut – combine that with Christmas and I wander around singing along to my Christmas playlist. But what goes into a Christmas playlist, what are the best festive songs of all time?

I’m not a purist and I believe music is a very personal thing but there are several songs I couldn’t do without at this time of year.

There has to be some Last Christmas Wham, a little sprinkle of Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, a dash of Greg Lake, (RIP 8th December 2016 – I’ll always remember you at this time of year!!), a pinch of Queen, Paul McCartney, The Waitresses and Jona Lewie and a soupçon of the Pretenders and Chris Rea, however, in addition there has to be some Carols, preferably from the Choir of King’s college Cambridge or the Oxford Trinity Choir and in that there has to be some Hark the Heralds and God rest ye merry’s – that’s a must! More recently I’ve bought into the whole John Lewis thing so recently Tom Odel and Lili Allen have squeezed in there plus a couple of other more contemporary tunes like Christmas Lights by Coldplay but there is one song I couldn’t do without at this time of the year, I know I’m a little bias, I know it’s horribly parochial but Christmas isn’t Christmas without a little Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl, (RIP 18th December 2000, again, always remembered at this time of year!).

Did you know that Shane MacGowan was born on Christmas day and the NYPD doesn’t actually have a choir? Anyway;

"You were handsome

You were pretty

Queen of New York City

When the band finished playing

They howled out for more

Sinatra was swinging

All the drunks they were singing

We kissed on the corner

Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir

Were singing 'Galway Bay'

And the bells are ringing

Out for Christmas day"

*Sighs and Smiles* Anyway, enjoy the link!!
