What Gives a SL Club longevity?

Clubs come and clubs go in Second Life, very few seem to have sustainability with many lasting just a few weeks, even some of my favourites over the years, Dogglounge, Sol, TrueHouse have all vanished into the obscurity of the pixel void, often a shame.

So, it’s with a strong sense of hope that my friend Ini’s new venture succeeds, but you know, I genuinely think it has a very good chance and here’s why;

First of all it has a great name – B.O. No, not a reference to the olfactory state of the place but an acronym for Blue Orange. Ini tells me the name is inspired by the play by Joe Penhall which was live over the summer at the Young Vic in London. The Telegraph described the play as; “An unmissable mind-game played on our own prejudices.” Some may argue a perfect description for Second Life? But I think the name says a lot about Ini, she has an innate understanding of many of the subcultures in Second Life and she knows how to play to a certain niche and that, in my belief, is the clubs winning formula for sustainability!

It looks and feels very different to the vast majority of clubs in SL, on arrival you are dropped onto an infinite black landscape, shallow waves lapping against a dark and foreboding shore, in the near distance is an open staircase leading down beneath the waves. Walking over and looking in through the surf you descend into a world of heterogeneous heaven. In the main body of the club there are no tip jars, no signs begging you to help keep the club alive, no “hosts” gesturbating filling your screen with inane, nonsensical crap, instead you find a landscape that really speaks to the brilliant artistic, eclectic brain of your host! Ini’s desire is to mix urban with classy elegant style to generate a smooth bohemian mood, a goal I think she’s achieved. I’ve no idea where she finds all the stuff in there but it all works brilliantly together giving a sense of grunge and grime meets chic and beatnik!

When I went there last I’d just missed one of the special themed evenings, “Sea-Sail & Stormy”, the dance floor had been turned into a blue green sea complete with atmospheric mist you could almost feel on your face and paper boats – I was sorry to have missed it!

Currently the five resident DJs are Ini herself, Dj Khaz, Dj Lucas, Dj Niels and Gitu Aura, all well established and much admired DJs in their own right! The music outside DJ hours is also an eclectic mix of genres and decades, again an insight into Ini’s amazing brain! It’s not for everyone but again I come back to the fact that she’s not catering for the masses, the place and the music will appeal to a small section of the SL community but it’s a section that will keep coming back because they will have found their place, their music, their atmosphere, their place to hang out. Whilst I was there I was treated to music from Motorama, Joy Division, Mushroom’s Patience, Minimal Compact, Nora Jones and Nick Cave. Of course guest DJs bring their own styles and mixes, however, next on the menu is a House Music set by Khaz Rotaru demonstrating the versatility of the club!

One final area of note is the “ArtCorner”. Perhaps I should have mentioned earlier in the blog, Ini is a brilliant artist and is well known for her original avant-garde style. Subsequently she is much respected by several other excellent artists who have collaborated to provide a small but unmissable gallery in one corner of the club – a collection worth seeing on its own merit regardless of what’s happening in the club next door! Artists such as Gitu Aura, Natalia Seranade, Daze Lander & Owen Lander along with Ini have all contributed to make the corner an oasis of artistic talent!

If you get the chance go take a look – don’t wait for a live DJ set – the place is magical in its own right! Click HERE for a TP.
